In my conversations across the district, I
heard you say you're pleased with the progress that's been made
toward lowering the county's crime rate.
But, you'd like to feel even safer.
As your county commissioner, I will forge strong partnerships
among the law enforcement and firefighting agencies that serve
the district's different municipalities. I believe each city has
smart, sensible, "best practices" the others could benefit from.
Through these collaborations, I'll make sure
the law enforcement agencies in Cedar Hill, Duncanville and Grand
Prairie benefit from any innovative approaches that have shaved
crime in Dallas, Irving and Lewisville ... and vice versa. If Coppell's
fire department has found a highly effective way to educate residents
about fire safety, I'll make certain the fire department in DeSoto
knows about it.
I'll also work toward better coordination
among all the cities' Homeland Security systems, so your family
will be safer in the event of a terrorist attack.
My track record on the Dallas City Council reflects my ability
to improve public safety:
- During my tenure as a councilperson, the
council agreed to make reducing crime its number one priority.
By the time I left the council, Dallas was no longer ranked
first in major crimes among larger cities in the United States.
- I helped launch a pilot program in Dallas
that dramatically reduced the time involved in clearing traffic
accidents. The project, which reduced costs significantly, forged
more cooperation between the Dallas Police Department and county
constables.
We can't prevent all crimes in Dallas County. However, we can
take steps to prevent a criminal from becoming a repeat offender.
I support the county investing funds to help
some people who have broken the law to learn skills that will
make them more likely to find employment. Skills-training programs
I helped initiate in Dallas graduated more than 100 people who
might otherwise have been a continuing burden to the city's taxpayers.
I also support providing companies with incentives
that motivate them to hire people who have paid their debt to
society.
My experience — for every 30 cents we
invest in these programs, we save taxpayers one dollar down the
road.
You have told me that protecting your loved
ones and your property from crime is a top priority. Know that
as your county commissioner, it will be my top priority, too.
